Bacterial flagellum
See the structure of the bacterial flagellum in three-dimensions. This is a 3D model of the flagellum of E. coli bacteria, with protein labels.[1] The model was made using SketchUp, a 3D modeling program distributed by Google. To view the 3D model in three dimensions, you will need to download SketchUp.

Visual Tour

Be sure to play the visual tour of the flagella in SketchUp by right-clicking on the 'Home' tab above the 3D model and clicking ‘Play animation’.

Educational tool

The 3D model and 2D image can be used as an educational tool for high school and college level instruction.

  • Classroom presentation - The 3D model can help in conceptualizing the bacterial flagellum at the protein level using a projection of the 3D image, or copying the 2D image on paper.
  • Fill-in the blank - A print-out of the image above at right could be used as a fill-in the blank activity/test when discussing bacteria or their movement. (click on the image to enlarge image) White-out the names of the proteins and photocopy for a quiz on the proteins.
